#GoWithGreg: Did Someone Say Waikiki?
Hawaii. A “bucket-list” destination for so many travelers whether it be for a romantic getaway, friendcation, or family holiday. And, for every reason! I had the opportunity to check out a few hotels in Waikiki a few weeks ago and fell in love with the sun and fun of this Hawaiian destination. When planning your next escape, here are two properties you should keep in mind (and you will receive special perks when you book with me!)
The Pink Palace of The Pacific
Who doesn’t want to stay in a Pink Palace? The Royal Hawaiian Resort gets this nickname from the color of the building which was inspired by the houses in Lisbon, Portugal! The salmon-pink color is found throughout the hotel including an Instagram-worthy wall in hotel rooms. (Fun Fact: The hotel is repainted every 5-7 years at a cost of around $1 Million.)
There are a variety of rooms in the expansive property with a Historic Wing as well as the Mailani Suites. I was able to sample both and each has its own charm and perks. Each door in the historic wing is handcrafted and carved with the Hawaiian Coat of Arms and is quite beautiful. The Mailani Tower has a private reception area with a lounge where complimentary breakfast and evening drinks/nibbles are served.
Onsite the pool area is lovely with attentive service and there is a private beach area (one of only two in Waikiki as it was grandfathered in). Make sure you stop by for a signature Mai Tai or two (and if you do two, I want stories!) I also really enjoyed the shops on the property with cute and unique souvenirs and a nicely curated sampling of gifts.
Oh, and I am writing this blog snuggled in one of the gorgeous pink and white striped Frette robes which I think is the perfect souvenir of your relaxing stay - pick one up!
The First Lady of Waikiki
As the name suggests, Moana Surfrider was the first resort built in Waikiki earning its name. Located a few doors down from The Royal Hawaiian, I was able to tour the property as well during my stay. The property boasts three buildings, each with its own advantages in room. The Tower Wing has a more contemporary feel with private balconies in each room. (Something I loved!) The Historic Banyan Wing had a more intimate feel but a nice historic aspect that many travelers would enjoy. The wing actually features a different wood in the furnishings of each floor. (2nd Floor: Oak, 3rd Floor: Mahogany, etc.) And the Diamond Wing offers stunning views of the beach.
One of the highlights to me of the property was the famous Banyan Tree which was planted in 1904. It currently stands 75 feet tall and 150 feet wide and is a beautiful site to take in. I would recommend grabbing a coffee or cocktail at the nearby bar and taking a moment to reflect. You can also relax on the property’s front veranda which has the recognizable rocking chairs. (Also present in some of the rooms.) Overall, the property is a relaxing escape and a lovely choice for those wanting modern convenience while taking in the history of the area.
Both hotels are Marriott properties so you can accumulate Bonvoy points with your stay. Additionally, they are all located within the same complex along with two Sheraton properties so you are able to easily stay at one and dine at any of the properties while transferring your tab to your room. This makes for an even easier and more convenient stay and I look forward to the additional perks they offer once they fully integrate these properties.
