Luxembourg City
I had a few days before I needed to be in Lisbon and I decided to check another country off my travel list - Luxembourg City! Honestly, I knew very little about the country outside of the location and I was excited to go in without any expectations. Knowing little, I arrived in the city and spent the next two days exploring - doing a lot of museums, finding some cute places to eat, and just trying to learn more about the history of the city. Overall, this is a perfect weekend adventure - you can really get a great grasp of the immediate area in a couple of days. I was there during the winter so it was definitely on the quieter side which I liked but I think there would also be a lovely energy during the summer months.
Stay
Le Royal Hotel Luxembourg is an incredible LHW property - right in the old town. I think this is a great location especially if you only have a couple of nights in the city because you are a 5-10 minute walk to museums and many of the “things to see” in the city. Sofitel Luxembourg Le Grand Ducal is also a popular location for travelers.
Eat & Drink
I found a lot of cute spots to grab a bite or drink along the way (including my favorite - an Irish pub!)
I highly recommend Scott’s Pub for a quick beer as you walk around Grund. They are so friendly and you will find some locals and travelers as well.
I spent both nights at a lovely spot near the LGBTQ+ center called de Gudde Wellen and can’t recommend it enough. It is a combo bar/event space and you can check our trivia night, shows, etc during your stay if you are there on the right night.
And, you can check out the oldest bar in Luxembourg - Ënnert de Steiler!
Things to Do
I think I did every museum in the city and loved each one! I highly recommend taking a walk to Chem. de la Corniche for the perfect photo op in the city. I found the City Museum quite interesting - although maybe a bit too much of a deep dive for the average traveler. Still, it gave me a great sense of the history of how the city and region came to be and what elevates it to where it is today. With this ticket, I was also able to visit the art museum - Villa Vauban - with my ticket which was a lovely experience. I would plan an hour or so for both.
On your stroll, take a minute to ride the elevator between levels of the city. This is not only a great way to take some cool photos but a unique experience (and frankly a lot easier way to get up the hill!) Everything is walkable in the city but the public transit is completely free, always, as well. So, that makes planning quite easy no matter where you want to go.
